There's nothing like the prospect of a Caribbean holiday to revitalise the spirits and it's certainly one of the top worldwide holiday destinations for a relaxing break. The Caribbean is of course famous for its gorgeous beaches, landscapes and weather, but it's also a great spot for top-quality resorts, excellent local food, friendly people and a wide range of activities such as surfing, jet-skiing, kayaking, jeep safaris, paragliding, horse riding, trekking and more.

To get into the right frame of mind for relaxation, give yourself a head start with the packing. Leaving this to the last minute - as so many of us tend to do - will only invite stress and disaster into the proceedings, as suitcases pop open, zips break, travel documents go missing, or you realise something vital has been forgotten.

Get organised with a list and draw up a timeline from the point of holiday booking, to the day you depart. Firstly, check whether any vaccinations are required for where you're heading and book in for them as soon as possible. Your doctor can advise if anything is required, but many jabs are needed well in advance of departure and may even be administered in two visits.

Also, organise your travel insurance in advance. Consider cover for extreme sports if anyone in your family is likely to undertake them. Don't skimp or cut corners with travel insurance and make sure the provisions of your policy are generous enough for peace of mind. Answer every question as fully and accurately as you can, particularly when it comes to pre-existing medical conditions and consider added extras such as legal protection and flight cancellation cover. Particularly if you have a young family accompanying you, sleeping in the airport won't be an attractive proposition if the flight is very delayed.

Also, sort out your travel money - a pre-paid debit card for international use or travelers cheques are two good options. Check local currency options and have a small amount of cash on you - but not enough to `flash about`. Remember that, as with expensive possessions, caution on holiday is recommended. Check that you're insured for any jewellery or cameras you plan to take with you and store all documentation safely together.

Pack hand luggage for the plane separately and follow latest guidance on toiletries and liquids. Pack games, books and entertainments for the journey. Food and drink can be purchased at the airport departure lounge. Make sure suitcases hold a broad range of items for all eventualities. No one needs fifty pairs of evening shoes - better to ensure you have a protective sun hat, scarf, sunglasses, flat shoes, long cover-up dress, swim wear, shorts, plenty of sun cream, light vests and easy to wear separates. One or two smart outfits is useful for evening wear.

Finally, at home before you leave on your exotic flight jaunt or cheap cruise holidays, make arrangements for a taxi pick-up or secure long term parking at the airport. Speak to the neighbours to arrange someone to check in on your house regularly, switch off electrical items and check that everything is locked up safely. The only thing that then remains is to go and enjoy your break to the full!
